Overview
Dolpo is Nepal’s largest and most remote district — a high-altitude plateau where Tibetan Buddhist culture, once threatened by the closing of the Himalayan salt trade, still survives in remarkable integrity. The Lower Dolpo trek follows the ancient trans-Himalayan trade routes that Peter Matthiessen documented in “The Snow Leopard” and Eric Valli filmed in “Himalaya.” You cross the Jengla Pass (4,870m) and Numa La Pass (5,003m), visit the ancient Shey Phoksundo Lake — Nepal’s deepest lake and most dramatic waterfall — and spend days in Bon Buddhist monasteries where medieval Tibetan practices continue unchanged.
