Overview

This combined tour crosses the Himalayas on the famous Friendship Highway — the world’s highest paved road — connecting Kathmandu to Lhasa via the 5,050m Lalung La Pass and the 5,010m Lungthung Pass. Along the route you pass through Gyantse (14th-century Pelkhor Monastery), the sacred Yamdrok Lake (the “Scorpion Lake,” turquoise and enormous), and reach Lhasa — the spiritual capital of Tibetan Buddhism — where the Potala Palace (Dalai Lama’s winter palace, 17 storeys, 1,000 rooms) and Jokhang Temple define one of the world’s most profound cultural landscapes.

Tibet Entry Requirements: All visitors to Tibet require a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) in addition to the standard Chinese visa. We handle all permit applications (requires 30 days advance notice minimum). We work with our Lhasa-based partner agency for all Tibet arrangements.
