Overview

Rara Lake is Nepal’s largest lake and one of its least-visited national parks. At 2,990m in the remote Karnali Province, surrounded by pine and juniper forest and home to migratory bar-headed geese, Himalayan black bears, wolves, and snow leopards, Rara National Park is the closest Nepal comes to a true wilderness sanctuary. The lake’s shimmering blue-green surface changes colour through the day — from deep midnight blue at dawn to brilliant turquoise at noon. Just a few hundred trekkers visit each year. Fly from Nepalgunj to Talcha (one of Nepal’s shortest runways) and begin a loop through the park.
